Hebrew School Overview  

Hebrew School is for children between 4th grade and Bar/Bat Mitzvah. It meets on Wednesday, 4:00-5:45 p.m. The curriculum of the Hebrew program is intended to give a fundamental knowledge of Hebrew as the language of prayer.

Dalet Class (4th grade) Students learn how to read in Hebrew putting together the letters and vowels. Students should be able to read and chant the Kiddish and Motze prayers.

Hey (5th grade) Students become familiar with most of the prayers recited during Shabbat services, as well as most of the blessings. Students will also become familiar with short Hebrew phrases. Students should be able to read the Avot, G’vurot and Kedushah, as well as know the songs Shalom Rav, Sim Shalom and Oseh Shalom. They should also be able to read and chant the Four Questions from the Haggadah.

Vav (6th grade) This grade does a comprehensive study of the prayers associated with the Shabbat services. Students learn to read fluently, learn the meanings and know key words in each of the prayers. Students should be able to fluently read all the prayers that are read in Hebrew on Shabbat morning, as well as read selected passages from the Haggadah.

Zein (7th grade) During this very important year, students finalize their reading of the Shabbat prayers. The meaning of the prayers that they are reading is emphasized. They will also work on their Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation.
