SLOTY

The San Luis Obispo Temple Youth Group (SLOTY) is designed to create an exciting environment for all Jewish teens in junior high and high school. There are two divisions in the youth group: Senior SLOTY, comprised entirely of Jewish high schoolers, and Junior SLOTY, made up of Jewish youth in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Both groups include Jewish youth from as far north as Paso Robles and as far south as Nipomo. Each youth group has an advisor in charge of running events. The Senior SLOTY advisor attends all board meetings, Senior SLOTY activities, and NFTY events; the Junior SLOTY advisor plans and attends all Junior SLOTY events.

Senior SLOTY differs from Junior SLOTY in many aspects.Whereas Junior SLOTY is led by the advisor, Senior SLOTY has an annually elected Board that includes a President, Programming VP, Religious and Cultural VP, Social Action VP, Membership VP, Treasurer, Secretary, and Historian. Each Board member has specific duties at each event and Board meeting. SLOTYites are also actively involved in NFTY, the National Federation of Temple Youth. This national Reform Jewish youth program, associated with the URJ, seeks to provide a strong Jewish base for the Reform Jews of tomorrow.NFTY is divided into many regions in the United States and Canada; SLOTY is part of the Southern California Region. Five annual conclaves are held in our region, usually in the Los Angeles area.

Typically, Senior SLOTY hosts events every month or every other month.Past events have included a SLOTY barbecue, sleepover, and poker night. No matter the event, however, everyone always has fun. Teenagers participating in this youth group are the future leaders of our community and are supported by the congregation in everything they do.

Junior SLOTY is available to students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade and shares the same goals as Senior SLOTY. Friendships made in Sunday and Hebrew School are maintained, providing additional opportunities for Jewish kids to associate with other Jewish kids their age. Meeting monthly, past events enjoyed by Junior SLOTY include movie nights, horseback riding, and Chanukah parties.
